📖 Full Review

BunsenLabs Linux emerged as the community-driven successor to CrunchBang Linux (#!) after its original creator Phillip Newborough discontinued the project in 2013. Staying true to its roots, BunsenLabs carries forward the same philosophy: deliver a rock-solid, minimal Debian base wrapped in a tastefully configured Openbox desktop that boots fast, runs lean, and gets out of your way.

Philosophy & Design

BunsenLabs strips away desktop environment overhead entirely. There is no GNOME Shell, no KDE Plasma — just Openbox with a right-click menu-driven workflow, a Tint2 panel along the bottom, and the Conky system monitor widget rendering live stats on the wallpaper. The default theme leans dark and monochromatic, delivering a focused, distraction-free aesthetic reminiscent of a hacker workstation without being intimidating.

Performance & Hardware Support

On a machine with as little as 512 MB of RAM, BunsenLabs boots to a usable desktop in seconds and idles at around 150–200 MB of memory. This makes it one of the most compelling choices for reviving aging hardware. Because it tracks Debian Stable, the kernel and packages are thoroughly tested, meaning hardware compatibility is excellent for any machine that Debian itself supports — which is a very broad list. A 32-bit i686 ISO is also available, a rarity in modern Linux distributions.

Installation & First Run

BunsenLabs uses a text-mode installer derived from Debian's own installer, which is functional but less visually polished than Calamares-based installers found on beginner distros. After first boot, a post-install script called "Welcome" walks the user through installing additional software bundles — this covers proprietary media codecs, fonts, utilities, and printing support. The script simplifies what would otherwise require manual terminal work.

Software & Customisation

The APT package manager gives full access to the enormous Debian Stable repository. BunsenLabs adds its own small repository for Openbox themes, Conky configurations, and helper scripts. Customisation is deep but manual — menu entries are edited in XML config files, keybindings in rc.xml, and panel layout in Tint2 config files. For users comfortable with text editors, this level of control is a strength. For newcomers, it can be a steep learning curve.

Community & Support

The BunsenLabs forums are active and welcoming, maintaining the warm community spirit that CrunchBang was known for. Documentation is thorough for common tasks, and since the base is Debian, nearly any answer found on Debian or Ubuntu forums translates directly. The project is entirely volunteer-driven with no commercial backing, which means release cadence follows Debian's own cycle — typically every two years.

Summary

BunsenLabs Linux is an excellent choice for anyone who values speed, Debian stability, and deep customisation over hand-holding and visual polish. It is not a distro for complete Linux newcomers, but for intermediate users — particularly those migrating from CrunchBang or looking to squeeze maximum performance from older hardware — it is difficult to beat.
