๐Ÿ“– Full Review

Ubuntu Unity is a labour of love โ€” a community-driven project that rescued Unity 7 from abandonment when Canonical pivoted to GNOME in 2017. What started as a fan project by Rudra Saraswat eventually earned official Ubuntu flavour status, cementing Unity's place in the Linux ecosystem for years to come. As of 26.04 LTS, it ships with Unity 7.7.1 and benefits from the latest Ubuntu LTS package base.

The Unity Desktop Experience

Unity's hallmark design is its left-side launcher panel and the top global menu bar โ€” a layout that maximises vertical screen space, making it particularly well-suited for widescreen monitors and laptop displays. The HUD (Heads Up Display) remains one of Unity's most innovative features: pressing Alt surfaces a search bar that lets you search application menus without touching the mouse, dramatically improving keyboard-driven workflows.

The Dash โ€” Unity's integrated application and file launcher โ€” provides unified search across installed apps, recent files, and online sources. While some of Canonical's original online "scopes" have been removed for privacy and relevance, the local search experience remains fast and intuitive. The workspace switcher grid makes multi-tasking effortless for power users who need to juggle many applications simultaneously.

Under the Hood

Ubuntu Unity 26.04 LTS rides on the Ubuntu 26.04 LTS base, inheriting its long five-year support cycle, access to Ubuntu's massive software repositories, and compatibility with Snap packages. The kernel is modern and well-supported, meaning hardware compatibility is excellent across a wide range of laptops, desktops, and even some older machines. APT handles traditional package management while Snap extends the software library to thousands of containerised applications.

Performance

Unity 7 is a Compiz-based compositor, which means it relies on GPU acceleration for its window effects. On modern hardware this is essentially zero overhead, but on older integrated graphics systems it may require disabling some effects. RAM usage at idle hovers around 700โ€“900 MB, which is lighter than vanilla GNOME Ubuntu but heavier than XFCE-based flavours. Overall, the experience is smooth and responsive on any hardware released in the last decade.

Software & Customisation

Being an official Ubuntu flavour means Ubuntu Unity ships with a curated set of default applications: the Nemo file manager, Firefox as the default browser, LibreOffice for productivity, and Thunderbird for email. Unity Tweak Tool provides GUI-level customisation for the launcher icon size, the Dash transparency, and workspace behaviour. Advanced users can dive deeper through CompizConfig Settings Manager, which exposes hundreds of plugin-level tweaks.

Installation

Installation follows the familiar Ubiquity installer (and newer Subiquity in some releases), making it accessible for first-time Linux users. Options to install third-party drivers and media codecs during setup reduce post-install friction considerably. Ubuntu Unity also ships with a live environment so users can try the desktop before committing to a full installation.

Community & Support

As an official Ubuntu flavour, Ubuntu Unity benefits from Canonical's infrastructure โ€” official bug trackers, Ubuntu forums, and a growing subreddit and Discord community maintained by the flavour team. Documentation leverages the vast Ubuntu knowledge base, meaning most Ubuntu tutorials apply directly. The project is actively maintained with regular point releases between LTS cycles.

Ideal For
Long-time Ubuntu fans who loved the Unity interface and want it back on a modern, supported base. Also great for productivity-focused users who prefer keyboard-driven workflows, global menus, and a clean side-panel launcher. Beginners transitioning from macOS will find the layout surprisingly familiar. Works well on mid-range laptops and desktops where a polished, no-fuss Linux desktop is the primary goal.
