Built explicitly for people leaving Windows on ageing hardware: a familiar layout, a "Lite Welcome" wizard that handles updates and drivers, and sensible defaults everywhere. Based on Ubuntu LTS, so software support is mainstream. Slightly heavier community than MX, but the gentlest learning curve on this list.
Ubuntu's official lightweight flavour, using the snappy LXQt desktop. You get the full Ubuntu repository and LTS support schedule with less than half the resource usage of standard Ubuntu. The desktop is plainer-looking — function over beauty.
Everything people love about Mint — the Update Manager, Timeshift snapshots, pre-installed codecs — on the lighter XFCE desktop. The best pick if the machine isn't ancient (4 GB+ RAM) and you want maximum comfort.
When nothing else boots, antiX does. Systemd-free, Debian-based, and happy on 512 MB of RAM — netbooks, Core 2 Duo-era laptops, even older. The IceWM interface takes a day to get used to, but it transforms hardware everyone else calls e-waste.
Puppy loads itself entirely into RAM, so the whole OS runs at memory speed even from a slow old hard drive or USB stick. Wonderful as a rescue/secondary system; quirkier as a daily driver.
Match the Distro to Your Machine
- 2013–2016, 4 GB RAM (Core i3/i5 era) → Mint XFCE or MX Linux. It'll feel like a new computer.
- 2009–2012, 2–4 GB RAM (Core 2 Duo / early i-series) → MX Linux, Linux Lite, or Lubuntu.
- Pre-2009 or under 2 GB RAM → antiX or Puppy. 32-bit-only CPU? antiX still ships a 32-bit edition — increasingly rare in 2026.
Realistic Expectations
A 15-year-old laptop running antiX will browse, type documents, play local video, and handle email beautifully. It will not comfortably run 4K YouTube, 40 browser tabs, or modern games — silicon has limits no OS can repeal. The win is turning "unusable" into "perfectly good second computer".
